He was responsible for building the company’ s first asphalt emulsion plant, and he ran the business until 1975 when my great-uncle took over operations, later succeeded by my father in 1990. Over those 90 years, we have completed all different types of projects, having built highways, roads, bridges, and some pipework.
“ When I came into the business in 2000, my goal was to focus on asphalt supply. We had three asphalt emulsion plants when I started, and have since expanded to eight plants: Akron, Ohio; Mercer, Chambersburg, and Reading in Pennsylvania; Greensboro and Black Mountain in North Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; and Seaford, Delaware.
“ The plant in Seaford, Delaware, which is the only asphalt terminal and emulsion plant
in the State of Delaware, is our most recent addition,” he adds.“ We took on the lease in April 2024, so this is our first full season of operating there. We were familiar with the Delaware market as we already supplied some materials into the state from our Baltimore plant. As Delaware was an adjacent market to our existing ones, it was a great expansion opportunity for us. At just five years old, this plant was in excellent condition, so we didn’ t need to do much to get up and running, and we were quickly able to start moving material.” Considering the company’ s impressive legacy built over more than 90 years, we ask Matt about the strategies and secrets behind such success and longevity.“ We operate a people-first culture and do everything we can to take care of the people working hard every day,” he says.“ This focus on people is a multi-generational philosophy that has played a key role in our long-term success.
