From humble beginnings as a basement-digging and residential grading contractor in Colorado, HEI Civil has evolved into a multi-state heavy civil business with the capabilities, workforce, and operating structure to deliver infrastructure projects across the Southwest and Southeast. Today, the company performs everything from mass grading and utility installation to roadway construction, bridges, concrete structures, and site development.
The transformation has unfolded over more than five decades. What began as a local excavating company expanded into municipal, transportation, commercial, and infrastructure markets, broadening its service offering while building the leadership structure necessary to support a much larger organization.
JP Morgan understands this growth firsthand. He joined HEI Civil in 2004 as an estimator and project manager, back when the company’ s revenue ranged between $ 5 million to $ 10 million annually. Now, as Chief Operating Officer and one of the company’ s owners, JP leads operations across several states, with the team working toward its next milestone: $ 500 million in annual revenue.
Despite that progress, JP rarely frames the company’ s story around numbers alone. Instead, he highlights the foundation built by founders Bill and Dan Hudick.“ Dan and Bill did a great job of building the foundation, establishing a fleet, creating our culture, and giving us a strong base to grow from. We also have some outstanding leaders here. The company is in good hands,” JP notes.
JP’ s answer reveals a core value. For all the talk about revenue, geography, and capabilities, he credits HEI Civil’ s progress to the people who built the company before it expanded beyond Colorado. The company looks different than it did in 1973, but leadership remains focused on preserving the culture, accountability, and relationships that have fueled its growth.
