“ Based in Spokane, Washington, we are a general contracting and construction management firm founded in 1944 by Gus Bouten, a Belgian immigrant who started out as a home builder, constructing upscale homes across Spokane before incorporating as a commercial contractor. For most of our 82-year history, we operated as a family business. Gus led the company until the early 1970s, then his son Frank took over and ran it through to the late 1990s. In 1997, Frank’ s son Bill was named president – a role he held until 2022, when a group of us took over leadership of the company and I became the first non-Bouten president in the company’ s history. Bill served as CEO until his retirement in 2024. Our geographic presence today covers Eastern Washington, North Idaho, and Northeast Oregon, with our main office in Spokane
and a branch office in Richland in South Central Washington,” he begins.
Having worked alongside Bill for 28 years, and having had the opportunity to learn from Frank as well before his passing last year, Tim has been mentored to lead the business with a clear sense of what has made it endure.“ What I really learned from both of them is that this business is all about relationships,” he reflects.“ We are builders, and our office team does a fantastic job of guiding the ship, but it is the people out in the field who are actually doing the work; building the buildings as well as the relationships. Our trade partners do around 80 percent of the work. We get the foundations in, but they build everything else. Hence, having solid relationships with trade partners, with owners and with our own team members is simply what makes our business work.
